Emily Compton
Urban Artisans Manager and Teaching Artist
Emily Compton has been an ArtMix Teaching Artist and staff member since 2001 and is the co-creator of the Urban Artisans program. She has a B.A. in Art History from Indiana University with a minor in Art History and Art Education with an emphasis in Printmaking from Herron School of Art and Design. Currently, Emily is a Teaching Artist and Artisans Program Director at ArtMix. She has served in many different capacities since joining the organization, including project coordinator, studio manager, and director of ArtMix’s gallery. She has taught in nearly every type of program that ArtMix offers - vocational, recreational, and educational. Currently, she primarily teaches in the Artisans transitional program which takes place year-round in the ArtMix studios. In addition to her professional career at ArtMix, she continues to find enjoyment and renewal in her own art practice in printmaking, photography, collage, painting, and ceramics.
“I love my work. I feel it’s my responsibility to use my knowledge, experience, and skills to instruct my students in the arts. The arts are a pathway to learning. The knowledge, experience, and skills that my students gain lead to not only learning through creative experiences, but also the development of confidence, life skills, and often a new outlook on life. I enjoy being a part of helping facilitate this wonderful process, which is very much a circular give-and-take process because my students teach me so much.”
