Mary Fran Brandenberger

South Bend, Indiana

Discipline(s):  Fiber arts: surface design techniques, embellishment, sewing, weaving, quiltmaking, printmaking, mask-making, bookbinding, collage

Bio:  Mary Fran began working with VSAI in 1995.  She graduated from Saint Mary’s College in Notre Dame, IN, with a BFA and did graduate work in Art Therapy.  Her current work includes working with women with various challenges (homelessness, mental illness, recovering addicts, victims of domestic violence and sexual assault) at a day center in South Bend.  In the last couple of years, a number of these women have started a cottage industry painting silk scarves.  She is also trained in Visual Thinking Strategies and is working in the community to bring this method of critical thinking using art children in the local schools.

Philosophy:  I believe that everyone is an artist in their own way and has a right to make art.  Art gives us another language to express and nourish ourselves and each other.
